Mustangs Drop Softball Doubleheader First Game But Recover to Take Second

SILVER CITY, NM — The Mustangs (19-12 overall, 16-6 RMAC) took on the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers (15-16 overall, 6-13) and ended up splitting on the day. The Orediggers had a strong fifth inning to take the first game, 10-5. The Mustangs bounced back to win the second, 5-3.

WNMU took the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third in the first game. Senior Meredith Drahota (Phoenix, AZ), first up in the inning, was hit by a wild pitch. Drahota then stole second and then advanced to third on an error by CSM's catcher. Up next, Cory Usher (Monterey, CA) walked. Usher then drew attention and stole second which allowed Drahota to steal home safely.

The Orediggers answered quickly, though. CSM's Kocman sent one over the fence, setting the score even.

The Mustangs was able to score two runs in the bottom of the fifth off of Jody Clark (El Paso, TX) single. Clark drove in Emily Robinson (Pleasant Hill, CA), who reached on a fielder's choice, and Debbie Yescas (Sahuarita, AZ), who singled.

The fifth inning belonged to the Colorado School of Mines though. The Orediggers were able to get six runs and five hits off of Mustang pitcher Brianne Grommon (Mesa, AZ). CSM then batted in three more runs in the top of the seventh.

The Mustangs tried to muster up a comeback in the bottom of the seventh but came up short. Only two hits and two runs scored. Antoinette Estrella (Glendale, AZ) tallied two RBIs off of a single, which sent Rebecca Reynolds (Benson, AZ) and Drahota home.

Reynolds went two-for-three at bat in the first game – both doubles. Grommon saw her record go to 12-5. She allowed 14 hits and two walks, but caused four strikeouts.

The Mustangs turned things around in the doubleheader. WNMU posted 10 hits in the victory.

In the bottom of the second, WNMU connected on three hits. Robinson and Clark singled. With two outs, Reynolds recorded another double, which sent Robinson home.

The Orediggers took the 2-1 lead in the next inning courtesy of two Mustang errors, but WNMU jumped back into the lead their next time at bat with two runs of their own. Estrella hit her second homerun of the season and also brought in Cassidi Caringi (Phoenix, AZ), who was standing on first.

With the score 3-2 Mustangs and two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Yescas and Robinson both singled. Yescas was able to round the bases and score off a costly CSM error, putting WNMU up two. CSM was able to score one more run in the sixth, but that was it.

WNMU scoring concluded with a Reynolds' homerun in the sixth. Reynolds, again, went two-for-three at bat in the second game. This time she posted one double and one homerun. She also batted in two runs. Robinson went a perfect 1.00 batting in the win.

Erica Beltran (Mesilla Park, NM) threw the win in her six innings pitched. She allowed five hits.
